What carbon percentage actually means
A field hockey stick labelled 90% carbon contains 90% carbon fibre in its construction, with the remaining 10% made up of composite materials such as fibreglass, Aramid, or resin. The carbon fibre provides the stiffness. The composite materials provide vibration absorption and durability.
When 100% carbon is not the right answer
The highest-carbon sticks are not automatically the best choice for every player. There are three situations where a 100% carbon stick works against you.
If you are still developing your technique
Maximum stiffness amplifies errors. A 70 to 80% carbon stick gives you more feedback on touch and receiving, which helps you learn faster.
If you play as a defender
Defenders take more stick-on-stick contact than any other position. Ultra-high carbon sticks are not built for that kind of repeated impact and will show wear faster.
If your game is built on feel and short passing
Midfielders who play a short, precise passing game often find that 80 to 90% carbon gives them the right balance: power when they need it and softness in touch when they do not.
Bow profiles for high-carbon sticks
At the high-carbon end of the market, almost all sticks come in low bow, extra low bow, or pro bow profiles. Standard and mid bow options become rarer above 85% carbon because the players buying high-carbon sticks are predominantly attacking players who benefit from a lower bow position.

Advanced midfielders
Midfielders cover more ground than any other position and need a stick that works in multiple situations: receiving under pressure, distributing quickly, hitting at pace, and contributing to attacking moves. The ideal carbon percentage for an advanced midfielder is 80 to 90%, with a low bow profile.
