What Size Field Hockey Stick Do I Need? Size Chart by Height and Age

The right field hockey stick size depends mainly on the player's height. Stand the stick upright beside the player: the top of the stick should sit between their hip and belly button. Junior sizes run from 28" for players under 4'0" (122cm) up to 35" for players up to 5'3" (160cm). Adults usually use 36.5" or 37.5", and taller players can step up to 38.5".

Field hockey stick size chart

Player height Stick size Typical age
Under 4'0" (under 122cm) 28" Under 7s
4'0" to 4'3" (122 to 130cm) 30" 7 to 9 years
4'3" to 4'6" (130 to 137cm) 32" 9 to 11 years
4'6" to 4'9" (137 to 145cm) 33" 11 to 13 years
4'9" to 5'0" (145 to 152cm) 34" 12 to 14 years
5'0" to 5'3" (152 to 160cm) 35" 13 to 15 years
5'3" and above (160cm+) 36.5" or 37.5" 15+ / adult
Taller players (a 37.5" stick sits below the hip) 38.5" Adult

These are guidelines, not rules. A player who is tall for their age may use an adult-length stick earlier.

How to check the size

Hold the stick upright beside the player with the head on the floor. The top of the stick should sit between their hip and belly button. If it sits below the hip, the stick is too short. If it sits above the belly button, it is too long.

Height or age?

Choose by height. The age ranges in the chart overlap, so a 12 year old might need a 33" or a 34" stick depending on how tall they are. Age is only a rough guide.

Should you buy a bigger stick to grow into?

No. An oversized stick is harder to control and builds bad habits quickly. Buy the right size now and move up as the player grows.

Taller players and the 38.5" stick

If a 37.5" stick sits below the hip, step up to 38.5". Naked Hockey makes the 38.5" size on selected senior sticks.

Frequently asked questions

What size hockey stick does a 10 year old need?

Most 9 to 11 year olds use a 32" stick, which suits players between 4'3" and 4'6" (130 to 137cm). Always check against height, as children of the same age vary a lot.

What size hockey stick does a 12 year old need?

It depends on height. A 12 year old between 4'6" and 4'9" (137 to 145cm) usually needs a 33" stick, and one between 4'9" and 5'0" (145 to 152cm) usually needs a 34".

What size field hockey stick does an adult need?

Most adults use a 36.5" or 37.5" stick. Use the hip to belly button check to choose between them, and step up to 38.5" if a 37.5" stick sits below the hip.

Is it better to choose a stick by height or by age?

Height. Age ranges overlap and children grow at different rates, so the height guide in the chart is more reliable.
